Yard Measurements

Landscaping Material Notes

  • All material loaded from our yard is sold by the yard, not ton.
  • A yard is close to a ton in mulch and topsoil, stone and slate are approximately 1.3 ton/yard.  Always round up.
  • Our skid steer bucket hold one yard, our 70z holds 3 yards.
  • Best driveway material is 1A's and dust.
  • Best stone by a pool is riverstone - smooth rocks that won't hurt liner of the pool.
  • Our topsoil is organic, made with local compost.
  • To figure out material needed for any area*, the formula is:

             (Length x width x depth [decimal form]) divided by 27

       **Example:  20' x 12' with a 4" depth

           (20 x 12 x 0.333)/27=2.96 yards of material

  • The area of a circle is πr2   (π = 3.14)

       **Example: radius is 8', depth is 3"  (3.14 x 64) = 200.96

           (200.96 x 0.25)/27 = 1.86 yards of material

  • To get decimal figure, take the depth in inches and divide by 12, or use chart:

1" = 0.083 2" = 0.166 3" = 0.25 4" = 0.333 5" = 0.416 6" = 0.5
7" = 0.583 8" = 0.666 9" = 0.75 10"=0.833 11"=0.916 12"=1.0
  • How much ground does a yard of mulch cover?
